Additional Desperation Information

Several cross-country travelers--including a writer, a family on vacation, and a professor and his wife--end up in the little mining town of Desperation, where a crazy policeman and evil forces force them to fight for their lives. Read by Kathy Bates.

What Customers Say About Desperation:

Lots of misspelled words. Loved the story, loved the characters. Lots of periods where there should not be one.

I have also never understood its strange relationship with The Regulators, in which many of the same people who lived and died in Desperation are unaccountably present for a nightmarish confrontation with a bunch of cartoon characters. This was the book that almost made me lose faith in Stevie, and that's really saying a lot. I usually buy his new books the first day they're out and read them within a few days.

Desperation is one of several glaring examples of Steve's inability to find an editor who can be honest with this huge genius. Avoid at all costs. He has rolled these characters out from his giant basement of stereotypes, with the plot jolting along from one head-scratching sequence to another.

I am a huge Stephen King fan. But I digress. Jump ahead to the more mature, thoughtful, altogether inspired Steve of Bag of Bones, Lisey's Story and Duma Key.

If I were to rank his work, I would put this novel somewhere near the bottom. Huh.

Maybe with a bit more wonder and respect; it fit well in the story and was a breath of fresh air. This book's companion, The Regulators was good, but not nearly as strong. It was also interesting that God and religion was handled a bit differently in this book than in some of his others. Desperation is the most enjoyable King book I've read since IT. If you're a fan of King or of weird action tales, Desperation is recommended. The book is fast paced, has a great cast and it's creepy; it has everything I enjoy in a Stephen King book. (And I'm a huge fan of most of his work). It lacks the slow, lagging, drawn-out sections that burden some of his other works like, Cell, and Insomnia; it's pretty much a moment to moment piece and most moments are nail biters.

They gave me a full refund, $4.00. No idea, the book was never shipped to me.

Although this novel deals with the theme of good vs. One of the golden rules in writing is to show not tell, and I feel like the reader is told too much about the good and evil. Desperation is definitely a fast-paced, worthwhile read, but it is in the mediocre category, albeit at the high end of King's mediocrity. evil, there are so many repetitive references to God that it becomes overbearing and destroys some of the subtleness of the dichotomy. Desperation is an enjoyable, disturbing King novel that is well worth the read, but it lacks the quality and depth of King's greater works like The Stand, The Shining, and It. Some of the narration and character dialog is subtly awkward during the first 150 pages or so, but the pace quickly picks up and I could not put the novel down. I feel that the characters are well drawn, but at the same time they seem rushed.
